James Hamilton Smith
ARTIST'S STATEMENT

In a world of imbalance and disconnectedness, we all struggle to embrace our relationship with the natural world. Humankind has managed to separate itself from its roots at a catastrophic rate. We have lost touch with the importance of respecting our planet. This concept is what drives my sculpture.

I hope to encourage the viewer to ask themselves questions about their own relationship with nature. My work strives to represent a balanced co-existence with the natural world. I convey this by combining elements from nature with those of human made origins. By placing these components together, they work towards a single cause, one of balance. Industrial materials such as concrete and steel find themselves juxtaposed with natural elements like wood and bamboo, questioning how they can work together.

For nearly two decades, I have pursued this passion to explore my place in this world, as well as to challenge the viewer to question theirs. The simplicity of forms, the tranquility of bamboo, and the balance of symmetry will all work together to remind us that we must simplify our hectic lives to find peace with each other, and with nature.
